What is Cubs?

Age Group
Cubs are the “junior” members of the Scout movement. The organisation is open to girls and boys. They may join from 7 years and must leave at 11 years – ideally progressing up to Scouts. The Cubs are placed into small groups – Six. A Sixer and a Second are the leaders of the Six and are responsible for team leadership and discipline in the Six. Unlike Scouts, they do not have any decision making powers or help to run the programme.

Purpose of cubs
The purpose of Cubs is to nurture and mould the children into responsible, useful citizens and prepare them for Scouts. The Cub Programme uses the Play-way method of learning by doing. It is much more fun tying banana leaves on your feet when shipwrecked than learning to learn to tie your shoelace. There is always a term theme and the programmes are drawn up around this theme. Games play an integral part in these programmes. The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling was introduced by Baden Powell to be used as the core theme around which the Cub Programme runs. The Pack Scouters receive the names of Jungle Book characters (Akela, Baloo etc). Ceremonies, games, outdoor activities, Promise and Law all have an element of the Jungle Book in them.

Our Cub Motto
“Do your best” is an important part of the Cubs responsibility. We acknowledge that all Cubs are different with varying skills, talents and abilities but whoever they are – we expect them to do their best.

Advancements
“All cubs (7-10,5) start as new chums and work on their Membership Badge. They learn about the movement, the Jungle Book, Promise and Law and their role in the six and Pack. This takes 4-6 weeks. Thereafter they are invested and welcomed into the pack and can then fully partake in the Grand Howl.

Once invested the Cub joins the advancement level according to their age:

  • 7-8 years – Caracal
  • 8-9 years – Cheetah
  • 9-10 years – Leopard
  • 10-11 years - Lion
It is expected that each Cub will move up a level every year.

From 10 they may also start working on their Leaping Wolf Badge – the highest award in Cubs. It takes commitment and enthusiasm from the Cub as well as support from the parents, every Cub does not earn it. They must complete it before their 11th birthday. They may wear their Leaping Wolf badge on their Scout Uniform.

The Link Badge can be completed from 10,5 years. Usually we have an overnight Link Badge Camp assisted by the Scouts. This prepares the Cub for his/ her move up to Scouts. They learn some basic skills as well as the Scout Promise and Law. Once they have turned 11 and have the Link Badge they are eligible for investiture as a Scout without going through a Membership Programme first. There is a special ceremony for this big day.

Interest badges
: There are 54 interest badges available. The purpose of these badges is to recognise the skills and abilities of the Cubs interests as well as to stimulate an interest in something they may never have tried before. Some badges require competency eg Swimmers – they must be able to complete the requirements – it is not enough that they do their best. Others will allow for different standards according to the child’s age and abilities. We have a Badge Tester Panel made up of parents mostly. The Cub will do the preparation; bring it to Cubs to ensure that it is complete. They can then arrange with the tester who will then pass them or suggest a few changes or further research and sign a certificate. Once Akela gets the certificate, she will issue the Badge as soon as possible. It is required that each Cub earn at least one interest badge a year. We generally have a stock of most badges and so we try to issue them within 2 weeks. If they have to be purchased from the Scout Shop, they may take a bit longer.
